How To Turn Off Windows Defender Temporarily

If you use another antivirus and want to make sure Windows Defender is turned off, or you want to turn it off for testing purposes, you can follow the steps given below. 

  • Click on the Start Menu and look for Windows Security. You can also type it in the search bar to find it quickly. 
  • In the Windows Security window, click on Virus and Threat Protection. You will find this on the right side of the pane as the first block. 
  • Select the Manage Settings option. You will find this below the Virus & Threat Protection Settings.
  • If the toggle below the Real-time protection is on, it means Windows Defender is turned on. Click on the toggle to turn it off. 

These settings will turn off the Windows Defender. However, you will still see it running in the background in most cases. Also, if you restart your laptop or PC, Windows Defender will be enabled automatically. 

How To Turn Off Windows Defender Permanently 

If you wish to turn this service off permanently, follow the steps below. 

  • You need to download Autoruns for Windows. This application is readily available on the internet for free. 
  • Once the process is completed, go to the file’s location and double click on it to extract it. 
  • You need to turn off Windows Defender. Follow the same steps in the method above. 
  • Make sure the real-time protection is off.
  • Click on the Start menu and type MSConfig in the search bar. 
  • You will see System Configuration App on the left and its settings options on the right. 
  • Click on Run as Administrator from the right pane. 

An Alternative to this is using Windows Run Box. 

  • Press Windows + R to open the run box. 
  • Type MSConfig in the open bar. 
  • Click OK. 
  • Now the System Configuration window will open up. You will see options like General, Boot, Services, etc., on top. Click on Boot. 
  • In the Boot options, check the box that says Safe Boot. 
  • Click on OK. 
  • You will get a pop-up asking if you can restart your device. Click on Restart 
  • Once this has been done, open the Windows Security App and ensure that it does not show any setting options. 
  • Now you can start AutoRuns for Windows. 
  • You will find ‘Options’ in the Menu Bar when you open Autoruns. Click on it. 
  • In the drop-down, uncheck the Hide Windows Entries setting. 
  • You will see a list of Windows Services below the options. 
  • Type WinDefend in the Search Bar and uncheck the box next to it. 

With the primary process performed, you also need to change the previous settings and boot the device into a Normal setup. Follow the given steps o do this. 

  • To Boot into standard setup, Open Windows Run Box and type MSConfig. 
  • Under General, select Normal Startup and then click on Ok. 
  • Restart the system. 

This process will permanently turn off Windows Defender without using any other antivirus application at the same time.
